Welcome - intro - what is this class about. Reference. Sketch.

Welcome to the "Pumpkins II" class. My name is Maria Raczynska, and I will be teaching you how to paint this "Pumpkins" - landscape using different techniques in watercolor.

The painting you will see in this class.

My test piece is below.

The painting you will see in this class - before I added shadows.

The steps are as follows.

  1. Painting pumpkins and hay first - 'loose and 'wet on wet.
  2. Using a wax stick to mask smaller areas on all the pumpkins. You can use masking fluid instead.
  3. Painting the sky/background, and the hay on top.
  4. Adding second layer for the pumpkins. Then shadows and more color.
  5. Re-wetting background, adding more color for the hay but also shadows for pumpkins.

In this class, I will be teaching you:

  • how to properly wet the paper;
  • how to apply colors 'wet on wet;
  • what colors to start with;
  • what 'water to paint ratio' to use when painting 'wet on wet, and 'wet on dry;
  • what to focus on, and what to leave alone, so the painting doesn't look overworked;
  • How to keep things airy and light;
  • How to add shadows underneath the pumpkins, but also over the pumpkins;

For the pumpkins, I have prepared these 'step by step images, separately.

For the 'step by step' above:

Step 1 is wetting the entire paper, then applying colors for the pumpkin only - ‘wet on wet. Preserving the light where needed, also working with possibly two shades of yellow. One lighter and one that goes more into orange.

Step 2 is re-wetting the pumpkin only (no background) and leaving some areas (right side) paper dry. Applying the colors for the pumpkin ‘wet on wet. Adding darks for shadows, using the ratio I call ‘cream top, for the darkest lines.

Step 3 is adding a third layer - ‘wet on dry, but only towards the left side of the pumpkin. This is optional, since you may not want to have any hard edges,

Step 4 is adding a cast shadow - bottom right.

This class contains 10 video parts, you can start and pause anytime you want.

Please do not worry about matching any colors, it's all about light and shadows, to create a nice balance in your painting.
